[ 09 Nights / 10 Days ]

Cycling across Himachal Pradesh is the perfect way to soak in the beauty of the windswept landscape and fascinating valleys. The best spot to encounter the surreal highlands and Buddhist relics in the state is to go on a Manali-Leh cycling tour. The pristine beauty of this region magnifies at Spiti Valley which is an ideal destination to get into the many facets of Northern India without pushing your limits. Biking in this sparsely inhabited place is perfect for those who seek bliss in solitude. Although the region has sub-zero temperatures, but pedalling here is less demanding and apt choice for beginners. Cyclomania in India brings forth a guided Manali Leh cycle tour to bring you upclose to the unadulterated beauty of green meadows, pine forests, Himalayan lakes and thousand years old monasteries. The tour is itself a slice of paradise and would surely bring you a lot of awe-inspiring moments. Riding along the Hind-Tibet Road, cyclists are known to experience the ecstasy of reaching another world. That’s how Rudyard Kipling described the cold desserts in his book ‘Kim’ that after passing the rough terrains and high altitude, you would reach ‘a world within a world’.

Day: 1 - Shimla – Narkanda (No Cycling)

The trip begins from the cold and snow covered district of Narkanda. The small town is located on the Hind-Tibet road at an altitude of 2708 meters. Bikers will reach Shimla to drive all the way to the scenic and peaceful village of Narkanda. Here you will be escorted to a hotel where you will chat with your fellow bikers and get a hang of your bikes. There are plenty of travel choices as Shimla has good connectivity.

The nearest airport is in Chandigarh. You can land there and take a bus to reach Shimla, from where you will be driving towards the high altitude region of Narkanda. On the way, you will get plenty of opportunities to get mesmerized by the views of fir forests. After reaching the pre-booked hotel, you will have dinner and complete the required paperwork to begin one of the most memorable and best bike trips in India.

Day: 2 Narkanda – Rampur (Cycling 66 Kms)

We will leave the hotel at Narkanda after breakfast and the trip of a lifetime begins by pedalling around trails full of mesmerizing views of orchards and hills. The altitude of Narkanda gives a scenic view of the Himalayan range. The undulating beauty of nature can be experienced throughout the road until we reach Rampur. We have got a great choice of routes throughout this Manali Leh bike tour, and the first leg of this trip itself has a little bit of everything to make you excited. On one side, there is breath-taking scenery of snow capped Himalayan range which is accompanied by gorgeous pine and maple trees on the other side. The slopes on this road are perfect prep work for the cycling fun coming ahead on this trip. Moderate biking on the country roads for about 5 hours throughout the day will prepare your body for the exciting days ahead. Apart from some steep ascents, the trail is somewhat easy.

After pedalling through the dreamland of sky touching fir and cedar forests, and some time spending is admiring the most fascinating mountain views complemented by the Sutlej Valley, we will reach Rampur and call it a day. We will take dinner and retire at a pre-booked hotel room at Rampur.

Day: 3 Rampur – Wangtu (Cycling 60 Kms)

The day starts with a dose of culture and history at the town of Rampur which was a former seat of the Princely states of Bushair. Having rich historic importance due to its location, the town was a part of the ancient trade route between Afghanistan, Ladakh, Tibet and China. A magnitude of temples and historic places are the highlights of this bustling town. As we move out of Rampur, the roads are a combination of uphill and downhill trails. Halfway through the route is fairly an easy ride. The spur cycle route begins when we reach Jhakri.

The cycle path is surrounded by scenic views and exhilarating experiences of steep ascents. After the occasional slopes, we will be heading towards Wangtu to encounter some rewarding views of the Baspa Valley. The region is covered with pine and oak forests and to put it simply nothing can beat the joy of exploring the view at a slow pedalling pace. Cycling on this day is comparatively shorter and easier. As we reserve this day for the conditioning your mind and body needs, we don’t gain much altitude and take the easier trails to reach Wangtu. Here we will retire and take the much needed rest before beginning biking on the challenging trails you would be dreaming of.

Day: 4 Wangtu – Kalpa (Cycling 50 Kms)

Day 4 of the tour marks the beginning of pedalling through the hilly region and experiencing the true sense of cycling in Northern India. After Wangtu we leave the lower Himalaya region behind and begin an exhilarating trip by gaining some serious heights through steep ascents and hairpin bends. The ride is short and scenic except for some challenging paths. Tour in the land of the incredible valleys begins with pedalling for about 30kms to gain an altitude of 400+ meters. The ride is fairly easy except for the last leg of this trail which includes a few adrenaline climbs.

For the last 15kms of this scenic ride, you will be rolling upwards to gain an altitude of 800+ meters before hitting Kalpa. This day marks the beginning of a challenging ride ahead as you would be riding through the vertical rocks of theKinnerKailasha mountain range. The roads will then lead us to Kalpa where you can make a toast to the sense of achievement you would experience after successfully rolling for the entire day filled with challenging trails. The steady climb would surely offer some rewarding views of the Himalayas.

On day 5 we will point our handlebars towards Pooh. As we will be rolling eastward towards Tibet, we will take the routes with a slight escalation in the altitudes. Halfway through the road and the greenery of Kinnaur is left behind. The next part of the trip features amazing rock formations as we will be heading towards the Indo-Tibetan border which is the gateway to the Spiti Valley. The road is in great condition and you will feel delighted throughout the route. The rewarding and amazing sights are encountered with the last 8 kms of cliffhugging trails. The road has historic importance as it was part of the old Hind-Tibet trade route. Along with rocky mountains, the route will offer some mesmerizing views of cascading water torrents. The sheer joy of pedalling all the way to experience the view is hard to be described in words. As you move ahead, the greenery is disappeared and the vegetation is sparse giving a vibe of reaching a different world altogether. Riding for more than 6 hours is somewhat easier except for a few adrenaline kicking uphill routes.

Day: 6 Pooh – Tabo ( Cycling 100 Kms)

Day 6 of this itinerary is often filled with emotions as we enter the cold desert of Spiti. The precept of visiting the ‘world within a world’ finally gets to come true on this day. After breakfast, we will be out of Pooh and begin the day with an easy downhill rolling alongside the mesmerizing views of the Sutlej river. The route is cut through the stratified fold mountains and looks very enticing to pause for a moment a behold the beauty. As we cross the Sutlej River and head towards the Spiti River, you will notice a rise in altitude resulting in strenuous pedalling movements. Day 6 is the longest day to test your endurance for holding the handlebars. As we progress on the path towards the Martian landscape of the cold desert in Spiti, the road gets thinner with absolutely no sign of habitation.

The steady climb and long cycling distance will put your mind and body through their paces but you are already be cycling in high altitudes for four consecutive days by now and it won’t be as challenging as it sounds. It shouldn’t be a problem for you to cross the hairpin bends and reach your destination as the surrounding views are no less than a reward for the day long pedalling. After crossing the challenging bends at Malling Nallah, we will be rolling downward for the next 40 kms to reach Tabo. The sweeping panoramic views can be admired with a leisurely pause as we will be covering a shorter distance on day 7. The quiet and scenic landscapes can be encountered while climbing slowly on the rocky roads but for a quick detour we will make a pitstop at Dhankar Village.
